Birgitta Henriques-Normark is a Swedish head physician and professor in clinical microbiology at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet. Her work focuses on microbial pathogenesis and on creating innovative vaccines against bacterial infections based on bacterial membrane vesicles. This approach has the potential to produce effective vaccines against many challenging pathogens like Streptococcus pneumoniae. She is a member of a number of academies including the European Academy of Microbiology, the American Academy of Microbiology, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA), as well as the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).
Staffan Normark is a professor in medical microbiology and infectious disease control at Karolinska Institutet. He is a leading expert in infectious diseases and molecular microbiology, with significant contributions to membrane vesicle-based vaccine research. His work focuses on underlying molecular mechanisms for infectious diseases, as well as utilizing bacterial membrane vesicles as a platform for vaccine development. He is a member of a number of academies including the European Academy of Microbiology, the American Academy of Microbiology, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA), the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and National Academy of the United States.
